Sandra Lucien-Calixte, a 48 year-old registered nurse, has been arrested and arraigned on charges of permitting serious injuries to an elder. Her alleged victim, a 75 year-old woman, was found malnourished and dehydrated in the suspect’s small, frigid basement covered in bedsores so severe they revealed bone.
The 75 year-old victim was discovered on February 16, 2014, in a small 8-by-10 room in the basement of the Palisades Circle home of the suspect and her husband in Stoughton, Massachusetts. According to Stoughton Police, the basement thermostat was turned to off, showing a temperature of 51 degrees in the tiny room. The victim had bedsores so severe that first responders noted exposed bone.
It is unknown how long the woman was kept in the basement. Sandra Lucien-Calixte has been described as a live-in caretaker, and is being held criminally responsible for the suspected elder neglect. Lucien-Calixte claims that, as a registered nurse, she took the elderly woman into her home out of the goodness of her heart when no one else was willing to care for her. When reporters went to the woman’s home to get a statement, her husband answered and said only: “We look forward to telling our side of the story.”
