OSHA Urges Nursing Home Care Facilities to Take Preventative Measures To Reduce Risk of Slip and Fall Accidents.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) reported in August, 2012 that employees at nursing homes and residential care facilities are 2.3 times more likely to miss work as a result of a slip, trip and fall injury as compared to other types of employees.

The data compiled by OSHA also shows that nearly 15% of accidental deaths in the US are the result of slip, trip and falls, second only to car accidents.

As a result, OSHA is urging facilities to take steps to prevent these injuries and is planning to conduct inspections for safety violations more frequently.

Among other things, OSHA recommends that these health care facilities install safety floor mats that absorb water near drinking fountains and sinks and special floor mats designed to reduce muscle and joint fatigue wherever employees must stand for long periods of time.

OSHA hopes that their campaign will help reduce the number of preventable personal injuries and wrongful deaths caused by slips, trips and falls.
