Nursing Home Resident Starts Fire At Facility In Chicago, Illinois Suburb.

At approximately 5 p.m., on Monday September 3rd, 2013, a hapless resident managed to spark a small fire that turned on the sprinklers and alarmed the residents of a nursing home in Burr Ridge, a suburb of Chicago, Illinois.

The resident, whose name has not been released, was apparently attempting to dry her clothes using a microwave oven. After the clothes caught on fire, the resident opened the door to the microwave which allowed the fire to escape and activated the automated sprinkler system at the Emeritus nursing home facility.

The local firefighters responded and quickly contained the fire without allowing it to spread to other rooms. The unfortunate resident and four others were rushed to an emergency room of a nearby hospital to receive treatment for smoke inhalation injuries. Although the fire was small and did not cause too much damage on its own, the sprinkler system covered an entire part of the building with water and caused extensive water damage to the walls and furnishings of the facility.
