Nursing Home Abuse and Neglect Becomes Central Issue In Illinois Republican Gubernatorial Primary.

Bruce Rauner, a Republican candidate for governor in Illinois, has recently come under fire for his private equity firm’s investments in nursing homes.

In 1980, Rauner co-founded GTCR, a private equity firm, which Rauner and his associates proceeded to turn into a multi-billion dollar business.  One area in which Rauner’s successful company made many investments was in the nursing home industry.  However, Rauner’s competitors in the gubernatorial primary have attacked Rauner for GTCR’s investments in nursing homes, saying that he and his partner’s “greed” adversely affected the residents in those nursing homes.

According to Illinois State Senator Kirk Dillard, another Republican candidate for governor, “People have died (in) nursing homes because of the way Bruce Rauner and his friends have invested in these homes.”  Rauner’s company has lost numerous lawsuits alleging patient abuse and neglect, paying out personal injury damages and wrongful death damages totaling over $2.3 billion.

In addition to attacks from his political competitors, Rauner also faces scrutiny from those worried about the Illinois Republican party’s prospects in the general election, should Rauner win the primary.  Many republicans are worried that Rauner’s known business dealings, along with any potential new revelations, could destroy any chance that the Republican party has of ousting current Democratic Illinois Governor Pat Quinn.
