New York Nursing Home Under Fire for Hurricane Sandy Failures.

The owners of the Promenade Rehabilitation and Health Care Center nursing home in Rockaway Park, Queens, New York, are being accused of nursing home neglect. The accusations are for their alleged failure to take adequate precautions in the days leading up to and during Hurricane Sandy, resulting in residents at the nursing home suffering from both a lack of power and running water nearly every day.

Promenade lost power during the hurricane, and its windows were blown out when the hurricane hurled a section of the boardwalk against its outer walls.  Flood waters also entered the building. This caused the Promenade’s generator, which was located on the first floor of the facility, to fail.

Eventually, the Promenade’s nearly 200 residents had to be evacuated by ambulance to emergency shelters around the city, many without their medical records. Due to Promenade’s failure to prepare, many of the home’s residents are still scattered around the city and have not been located by their family members.

Promenade has defended itself by claiming that it was adequately prepared. Promenade also blamed the failures on state officials, whom it says did not tell it to evacuate its patients until it was too late.
