California Nursing Home Residents Abandoned by Staff at Facility.

According to Castro Valley, California Police, the nursing home staff at Valley Spring Manor nursing and rehabilitation facility simply walked off the job last week in what appears to be a botched closure of the facility. As a result of the majority of staff leaving, the patients were left in deplorable conditions until a medical emergency call alerted local authorities to the situation.

In a bizarre scenario, the patients were abandoned at the nursing home facility on Thursday, October 24, 2013, just after the nursing home staff received word that California State Social Services revoked the facility’s license, thereby effectively shutting it down. After the agency shut down the facility and placed a “Closed for Business” sign outside, almost the entire staff and a number of patients simply walked away. All that remained were 14 patients in need of constant care and a skeleton crew consisting of a janitor, cook and caretaker.

On Saturday, October 26, one of the remaining staff members made an emergency medical call to summon paramedics. The paramedics in turn summoned the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office deputies after becoming concerned with the situation. The paramedics discovered most of the patients covered in filth and showing signs of serious distress. Several patients were confined to beds and wheelchair and literally could not leave the horrid facility.

At this point, the police are stating that the facility was closed down for multiple unspecified violations. The Social Services are not commenting on their apparent lax supervision of the shut-down process. The police are also hunting for the owners of the facility as the investigation of this case continues. According to the district attorney’s office, the owners could face criminal elder abuse charges for their role in this unfortunate nursing home negligence situation.
