California Nursing Home Fined $100,000 For Overmedicating Elderly Patient.

The Lincoln Meadows Care Center in Lincoln, California was recently issued a $100,000 fine, and a strong citation, by the California Department of Public Health (“DPH”).  This punishment comes after an investigation into the wrongful death of an 82 year-old patient and resident of the nursing home. The patient died in 2011.

The patient had fallen from his wheelchair in May of 2011 and sustained serious personal injuries.  Local California authorities believe that the man should have been hospitalized immediately. But only after days of insistence by the man’s daughter was the man eventually taken to a hospital.

When the injured nursing home resident was finally admitted to the hospital, it was discovered that the level of Coumadin, an anticoagulant drug, in his blood was 18 times what is considered a normal level.  The man died soon after, in June of 2011.

The punishment handed down by the DPH may be an indicator that public officials are starting to seriously crack down on negligent care by nursing home staff with respect to our nation’s seniors.
