California Department of Public Health Cites Nursing Home For Over-Medicating Patient Causing Wrongful Death.

The Lincoln Meadows Care Center in California was recently cited and fined by the California Department of Public Health after investigations into the wrongful death of an 82 year-old patient at the facility in 2011. The nursing home was hit with a Class AA citation, as well as a $100,000 fine, stemming from the nursing home neglect incident.

According to the California regulators, an unidentified 82 year-old patient was over-medicated with the blood thinner Coumadin by nurse’s aides at Lincoln Meadows back in 2011. As a result of the over-medication, the patient fell from his wheelchair and struck his head, but he was not immediately hospitalized.

Four days later, at the insistence of the man’s daughter, he was transported to the hospital where doctors discovered that he had a subdural hematoma, low blood pressure and multiple organ failures. Hospital records show that the man then had 18 times the normal level of Coumadin in his system.

The man died shortly thereafter in another elder care facility, where he had been transferred for hospice.

The Foundation Aiding the Elderly filed a complaint on behalf of the patient and his family with California state regulators. The citation and fine issued by the Department of Public Health are the harshest that the regulatory agency has issued to date.
