George Dayln Houser, the owner of three nursing homes in Atlanta Georgia, and his wife, Rhonda Washington Houser, both pled guilty recently to criminally defrauding Medicare and Medicaid. According to Georgia authorities, the couple received over $32.9 million in payments from Medicare and Medicaid, but did not use the money for the resident’s care, and instead pocketed much of the money for themselves. In order to receive money from Medicare and Medicaid, George agreed to provide the elders with a safe and clean physical environment, nutritional meals, medical care and other assistance, none of which was done.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and other federal departments began to investigate the nursing homes after residents, family members and nursing home staffers began to voice complaints about the unsanitary conditions within the homes. Houser and his wife allegedly spent the Medicare and Medicaid money on hotel real estate investments, new homes, vacations, luxury cars, new furniture and nannies for their child. Houser even bought his ex-wife a million dollar home in Atlanta with the Medicare and Medicaid money. The state of Georgia shut down the three nursing homes recently and the residents were placed in other nursing homes.
