After a month-long investigation, police in Springfield, OH have arrested a man who sexually assaulted a disabled woman at an area nursing home.
The investigation began after a 21 year-old resident at the Heartland of Springfield Rehabilitation Center told the staff there that a man came into her room and sexually assaulted her.
Larry E. Thompson, 42, was arrested this past Wednesday and charged with gross sexual imposition, a fourth-degree felony, to which he pleaded not guilty. He asked for a public defender to be appointed to his case, and is currently being held in the Clark County Jail on a $10,000 bond.
According to the National Center on Elder Abuse, there were 5.9 million cases of abuse reported in nursing homes and other care facilities in 2010. About 58 percent of those cases involved neglect. Just 0.04 percent of these abuse cases involved a sexual assault. The majority of victims are female.
